Dixel 0.0.21: better exports, merged sampling, and gallery folders

Dixel — Pixel art, built for Android

Dixel 0.0.21 is all about getting your work out of the app and organized. It brings export scale presets, exporting layers as separate files, a merged-sampling eyedropper, selection refinements, and gallery folders. Everything here is free — the only Pro part is upscaled export, which is unchanged.

One-tap export scaling

The Upscale control in Share used to be a plain dropdown of every legal factor. It's now a one-tap preset row of the sizes pixel artists actually reach for — 1×, 2×, 4×, 8×, 16× — with a Custom… menu that still gets you every in-between factor (3×, 5×, 6×, …). Only the factors that fit your canvas and your device are offered. Dixel also remembers the factor you last exported at and pre-selects it next time. Scaling stays nearest-neighbour, so your pixels never blur. 1× is free; upscaling is Pro, as before.

Export each layer as its own file

New in the Share dialog's Image tab is a What to export choice. Pick Layers as separate files and Dixel writes one PNG per visible layer, then opens them together in a single multi-file share sheet. Each file holds that layer's raw pixels — no blend mode, no layer opacity, and no CRT baked in — so a layer you re-import lands exactly as it left. Hidden, reference, and group rows are skipped, and the count is shown before you export. Every file is verified as it's written, so the share sheet never holds an empty image, and one failed layer never stops the rest. PNG only for now; 1× is free, upscaling is Pro.

Sample the colour you actually see

The eyedropper gains a Sample source in its gear: Active layer (the old behaviour) or All visible. Set to All visible, it reads the blended colour of every visible layer under your finger — the "sample merged" pick you know from other editors. It's a separate setting from the Bucket/Color sample source, so the two don't fight each other. Free.

Reshape a selection

Selections get four crisp, whole-pixel operations from the selection gear or the context bar: Select all, Invert (with nothing selected, it selects all), Expand (grow by one pixel, repeatable, stops at the canvas edge), and Contract (shrink by one pixel, repeatable). There's no soft feather — hard edges are the right fit for pixel art — and none of these change your pixels. Free.

You can now organize the gallery into folders. Select one or more projects, tap Move to folder, and pick an existing folder, move them back to the root, or type a new name to create one on the spot. Free.

And a friendly nudge

After a successful export, a gentle in-app rating prompt may appear — never over the share sheet — and there's a new Rate Dixel row in Settings if you'd rather leave a review on your own time. It helps more people find the app.

Happy pixeling.
