Dixel 0.0.8: a home for tool settings, and symmetry

Dixel 0.0.8 cleans up where a tool's settings live, and it adds symmetry drawing.

Tool settings move to a gear

The gradient was the first tool with its own settings, and until now that panel sat on the canvas the whole time the tool was active. On the unfolded inner screen it covered about half the picture, even while you were dragging the gradient you were trying to set up.

Now every tool that has settings shows a gear at the top of the tool ribbon. Tap it to open the settings, and tap it again to close them. On a phone the gear opens the Options tab and jumps to the tool's settings. On a tablet or the unfolded screen it opens a small panel in the top corner that you can close with the gear or the close button. The panel starts closed, so it stays off your work until you ask for it.

Tools without settings leave the slot empty, so the gear also tells you when a tool can be set up. Brush size, opacity, pixel-perfect and symmetry apply to every tool, so they stay where they were.

Symmetry

You can now mirror your strokes as you draw. Mirror left and right, up and down, or all four ways at once, with the pencil, eraser, line, rectangle and ellipse. Pick the mode and move the axis from the left rail on a tablet, or the Options tab on a phone, and reset it when you are done.

More that changed

  • The tool ribbon scrolls, so you can reach every tool and the gear on the small outer screen.
  • On phones the bottom panel is limited in height, so the canvas always keeps at least half the screen. The palette and layer lists scroll when space is tight.

The full list is on the changelog.

Thanks for drawing with Dixel. More to come.
